Keynote speaker – Corey DePina, ZUMIX Director of Programs – his story and connecting to passions and roots
Corey DePina is a skilled rapper and workshop leader who hosts Boston’s largest and longest running all age open one mic event: Critical Breakdown. His work as a facilitator for local and national non profits and community centers has earned him numerous awards, including: the 2008 Good Neighbor Award from East Boston’s NOAH, the 2008 Community Leadership Award from Jamaica Plain’s Hyde Square Task Force, the 2011 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Awards, President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, and the 2014 Best Initiative, Best Youth Worker of the Year. In 2020, Corey received the Black Excellence on the Hill award from the Massachusetts Black and Latino Caucus.
History of Hip Hop with Corey DePina
From its origins in Latin, African, funk, and soul music, hip hop has grown into a worldwide phenomenon. But did you know that it all started in one neighborhood in the South Bronx? Corey took students through the early history of hip hop and its four elements – MC-ing, DJ-ing, breakdancing and graffiti – to inspire them with the possibilities of creating something positive out of everything.

Watch as students used interactive quizzing to check their knowledge and learn how to get the support they need. Students collaborated using the Mentimeter live polling website.
What’s the Deal with Main Street?
Local representatives (Nolan King from Jon Zlotnik’s office, Sam Squailia, and Colin Smith from Gardner Mayor Michael Nicholson’s office) were there to listen to students ideas! Students raised their voices to share what’s happening in their towns that they would like to improve. During this workshop, students discussed changes they’d like to make happen and learned concrete ways to advocate for change through the local government. There was also a trivia competition with cash prizes between classrooms and local officials for prizes!

Performing artist, songwriter, and coach, Whitney Doucet talks about the steps she took to go from her first performance at a Fitchburg High School talent show, to singing on stage with country music star Keith Urban, having her song placed on the 2019 official Grammy ballot, performing the National Anthem at the New England Patriots, and what it means to follow your dreams.
You’ll find out the steps you can take to get started in your own music or performing career and get Whitney’s step by step guide on what it takes to be a great performer at any level. Last, but definitely not least, Whitney will show you the goal-setting technique and goal chart Taylor Swift’s management team used when she started her career.

It can be scary when your pet is sick or experiencing a medical emergency! What can you do to help your pet before you get to the vet? What are some of the most important skills you should have–and that could save your animal friend’s life?
This video offers a crash course in veterinary medicine from the experts–the Vet Tech faculty at Mount Wachusett Community College. Learn how to take a heart rate, respiratory rate, and temperature. Plus how to apply a simple bandage, what to do if a puppy chews on an electrical cord, and how to apply a muzzle using a belt, rope, or leash. This session will prepare you should something happen to your pet at home or if you see an hurt animal on the side of the road.
