Keynote speaker – Corey DePina, ZUMIX Director of Programs – his story and connecting to passions and roots
Corey DePina is a skilled rapper and workshop leader who hosts Boston’s largest and longest running all age open one mic event: Critical Breakdown. His work as a facilitator for local and national non profits and community centers has earned him numerous awards, including: the 2008 Good Neighbor Award from East Boston’s NOAH, the 2008 Community Leadership Award from Jamaica Plain’s Hyde Square Task Force, the 2011 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Awards, President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, and the 2014 Best Initiative, Best Youth Worker of the Year. In 2020, Corey received the Black Excellence on the Hill award from the Massachusetts Black and Latino Caucus.
History of Hip Hop with Corey DePina
From its origins in Latin, African, funk, and soul music, hip hop has grown into a worldwide phenomenon. But did you know that it all started in one neighborhood in the South Bronx? Corey took students through the early history of hip hop and its four elements – MC-ing, DJ-ing, breakdancing and graffiti – to inspire them with the possibilities of creating something positive out of everything.

Connection in the Kitchen, with Minna Scholten of Growing Places
Connect with your inner chef, and with each other! In this session, students used polls to upvote ingredients for a healthy and delicious snack made live on camera. Students could print the recipe, take it home, and show off your skills with your family!
Chair Yoga, with Avery Kress, Alexandra Chalifoux, and Kelsie Guarente of Reliant Media Group
Whether learning to focus abundant energy or manage a spectrum of emotions and sensory overload, this session was an opportunity for a class of students to learn some techniques that they can use together or individually and perhaps even agree on what works best for them to be successful in managing their energy, senses, and emotions.

You are working with a teammate who happens to be a 1,200 pound, living and breathing animal with a mind of its own. As one of the most challenging sports out there, horseback riding is also one of the most rewarding.
You may not realize that North Central Mass is a hub for horse lovers with many farms, riding centers, trails, clubs, and competitions. Join this session to hear from two members of the horse community–Wildwood Farm’s manager and one of the riding instructors. Our love of horses has turned into a lifelong career of caring for horses and helping others work with these beautiful and intelligent animals. Do you have what it takes to be an Equestrian?
Toast Critters Tutorial
Watch two high school students prepare fun and simple snacks that elementary students can make on their own with no stove top required. Students will get great ideas to satisfy their tummies and power their bodies and minds. They’ll learn about the importance of color, texture, and flavor to create snacks that are satisfying and fun to eat.

We’ll look at X-rays of animals who have eaten things they shouldn’t have, and had to be brought to the vet. Find out why pet owners need to careful about what their pets get into and how to keep your animal friends safe. AND you’ll be part of an interactive pet exam where YOU can guide the vet on where to hear a heartbeat or look into the pet’s eyes and more crazy fun!
